St. Eugene de Mazenod Primary School in China
October 5 the new St. Eugene de Mazenod Primary School was officially opened and blessed by Cardinal Joseph Zen.
It becomes the third Oblate school facility in Hong Kong. In 1975 the Oblate Primary School was opened. Its high academic record has meant a high enrollment. To accommodate the many students, it has in fact for many years been composed of two separate schools existing within the same facility, each with separate principals and teachers. One was referred to as the “A.M. school” and the “P.M. school” since one was conducted in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

Last year, because of its outstanding record, the Oblate Primary School was given permission by the Hong Kong government to split into two separate campuses, both now becoming full-day schools. A large multi-storied building that previously housed a vocational school was remodeled and has is now the new home of St. Eugene de Mazenod Primary School. The new school, midway between Oblate Primary School and Notre Dame Secondary School, has 590 students and 34 teachers.

Oblates, friends, teachers and representatives of the other two Oblate schools gathered for the celebration. In a prominent position is the newly finished bronze replica of St. Eugene De Mazenod with the Oblate cross in the auditorium wall. It was modeled on an original in Europe but modified by Hong Kong artist and completed in mainland China.
